David
Coupe was born in Sherwood, Nottingham (within 14 miles of
the world famous Major Oak tree in which Robin Hoods and his
merry men are reputed to have taken refuge from the Kings
soldiers) where he still lives and works today.
During
his career as a commercial artist / illustrator, David has
produced schemes for Raleigh Cycles, Boots the Chemist, Tupperware,
Viyella, Players Cigarettes, Yorkshire Bank, Wimpy Homes,
Thomas Cooke Travel Agents, Weetabix, Butlins Holiday Camps,
British Home Stores, McCain Foods, IBM, Horizon Holidays,
Charnos Hosiery and Bassetts Sweets etc.
David
has since specialised in painting landscapes and portraits,
and has become fascinated by Victorian Townscapes, employing
watercolour, oils, pastels, gouache and pen and ink techniques.
Over the years he has produced over 1000 original paintings,
many of which have been sold in such places as Harrods, Libertys,
Selfridges and are in collections in London, Boston, Dallas,
New York, Paris, Nigeria, New Zealand, Australia, Germany,
Switzerland and Canada, over 100 having been commissioned
for use as calendars, greeting cards and prints. He has exhibited
in Nottingham Castle Gallery, Focus Gallery, Wells Museum,
Pentagon Gallery Stoke, The Mall – London and The English
Gallery in Boston USA from where six paintings were purchased
by a large insurance company and currently sit on display
in their New York office.
A
keen touring cyclist David’s travels have taken him
to many parts of England, the Lake District, Wales, The Isle
of Man, Norway, northern, eastern and southern France, Switzerland,
Austria, the Dolomites in Italy and the Pyrenees in Spain.
David
has worked for New College Nottingham since 1982 giving watercolour
lessons, and for nine years taking oil painting classes at
Nottingham Prison. For ten years until 2003 David produced
over 500 watercolour illustrations for large companies in
various parts of America.
David
